MIRA (COIMBRA - PORTUGAL)

MIRA
40.42762º N; 8.73770º W

Mira is a Portuguese village in the district of Coimbra, located in the province of Beira Litoral, in the Centro region (Beiras Region) and in the Region of Coimbra sub-region, with about 7 300 inhabitants.

It is the seat of the municipality of Mira with 124.03 km² of area and 12 465 inhabitants (2011), subdivided into 4 parishes. The municipality is limited to the north by the municipality of Vagos, to the east and south by Cantanhede and to the west, it has a coastline on the Atlantic Ocean.
In the Muslim period, this region was the scene of wars between Christians and Arabs when they dominated this part of the coast.
With the Christian Reconquest, especially in the last conquest of Coimbra from the Arabs in 1064, the history of the lands of Mira is now more clearly documented.
After the great recession of the 14th century, which will also have hit Mira lands, even disappearing some places previously known, it was royalty, in the Avis dynasty, that brought a new and great impulse to development.
